The MGF Archive: Collectables

Words and comments:
Rob Bell

Since the Geneva launch of the MGF in 1995, a considerable amount of publicity material has been produced - from Launch Packs, through press releases to Post cards used to increase public awareness. Some of this material is included here. If you have any MGF-related material that isn't already here, please do let me know.

MGF Postcards

The MGF postcards were a clever way of rooting the 'life style' features of the new MG sports car. All the post cards bore the inscription: "Copyright (c) 1924 MG Sports Cars" to emphasise the history of the MG marque. The cards I have in my possession were largely collected from Health Clubs/ Gyms - which gives you a clear idea as to which market the car was being targeted towards at the time...

The postcards were printed by Boomerang Media (PO Box 7009, RG27 8YL, Tel: 01252 843444) and were current during the period 1997-98. The cards had two releases: the sun set, wind in hair, open road and dog images were in the first batch, whilst the gravel drive and the seagulls postcards were a later release 12 months later. You'll notice that the seagulls image is not of the original post card: if anyone has this image, please forward it to the MGF Register webmaster - thanks!

MGF Brochures

There were a number of brochures released during the life time of the MGF - and these can be seen below. The original brochure featured the VVC 5-spoke alloy wheel, with a green right margin. An intermediate design of brochure, the red "Fast Forward" brochure was a centre fold design, featuring a hard-top equipped VVC with a tear-off for requesting further information. The last brochure was coincidental with the launch of the MY2000 MGF: featuring that seagull design once again. Very stylish.

I am currently awaiting pictures of the TF brochures for inclusion here.

MGF Collectables

When Rover Group launched the MGF, they were also ready (probably with BMW's keen marketing team's suggestion) with a whole load of accessories and options that you could buy with your MGF. A large, high quality brochure was available from show rooms, and I show you a few of the items included here (some of which I don't think I've ever actually seen outside a picture!)

Leather MG branded atlas covers. Remember atlases? Very 20th century - no sat nav in those days...   Quite a common one this - MG sold this good quality MG branded cap with embroidered logo and suede peak. Actually rather nice!   Leather CD holder - with MG logo. Again, CDs? At least it wasn't a cassette holder - although the standard ICE was for cassettes...

More clothing accessories - this time a branded crew-neck sweater. In British Racing Green, obviously...   Tie pins and cuff-links also got the MG treatment. Probably that ideal Christmas present for any MG enthusiast ;)   Another sign of the times: an MG branded Filofax! Check out the pictures of the calculator, mobile phone and Dictaphone.

When you bought your MGF, you got a pretty nice key fob anyway, so why you were also offered an alternative I am not sure, but this is pretty nice, especially as it is octagonal shaped!   De-rigor lapel wear for any MG executive - and probably for MG club types.   The midlands is famous for it's potteries as well as heavy industry and car manufacture. So no surprise to find MG mugs in the catalogue.

Not just one pen, but multiples! Fountain pens, ball-points and retracting pencils. By Parker no less. Some with printed MG logos, and others with MG logos on their pins - classy.

Yet more clothing accessories - Polo Shirts. Plus this time you get a choice of BRG and white!
MG, they really spoil you for choice.
In case you sat in your office and yearned for your car, here are a collection of models for your desk. Phew. Not much use if you bought a Volcano or Amaranth MG though?   MG sun glasses by Ray Ban. Ray Ban and MG logos. Very nice!

More sweatshirts in, yes, you guessed it, British Racing Green.   This is where the MG teddy bear started. No idea why someone thought this was a good idea, but their popularity suggests it was a good idea.   Like the polo shirts, a similarly vast range of colours for the T-shirts: white and British Racing Green.

A wallet for her...   ... and a wallet for him! Life style positioning again: look at the magazines used in the back ground for these shoots. As an MGF owner, you were interested in style, adventure, the great out-doors. And Golf. Apparently.   His and her watches. MG weren't sexist. The chronograph men's watch looked especially good. Can't comment on it's reliability though.

MGF Collectables - non-official

Of course, it wasn't just MG themselves who made MGF related collectables - there were plenty of other parties interested in selling MGF related models. Most I am sure had official sanction. Many perhaps did not.

I came across this MGF slot car on the internet - but I don't know much about it. Rubbish colour, but some interesting interior detailing. Could potentially be painted up to look like an MGF Cup racer, if you had the patience and inclination!

MGF Collectables - electronic

If we're talking about collectables and various other knick-nacks, why constrain ourselves to the physical and consider the virtual. After all, MGFs can be found on computer games! Yes, that gaming favourite, Gran Turismo, has featured MGFs in at least three of its generations: from GT2 to GT5.
